Crackle and 3D Stencil Application on Furniture
I always try to find ways to create layers of texture when painting furniture especially with a crackle finishes and 3D stencil on the same piece. What is a crackle finish? It’s a technique where you can create an old world look with using two paint colors that are not closely related ( i.e. black and white, grey and white, red and black.) of paint to create dimension to any piece of furniture or accent pieces such as picture frames. .
What is 3D raised stencil? This is where you can use a paste such as joint compound to create a 3D effect with a stencil.
What did I use?
-
Wise Owl Saffron Thread and Mohair
-
Art Minds Crackle Paste
-
Cling On O40
-
Stencil
-
Joint Compound Paste-found at the hardware store
-
Salve-to seal
-
Putty Knife
As always, i prepped my piece. For this blog I will be using a headboard

I mixed saffron thread and mohair to create my base coat.

After the paint dried I applied the 3D stencil using the joint compound paste and a putty knife.
After the putty has dried I applied the crackle medium. The trick here is to apply thick layers to allow for larger cracks. I recommend waiting for the crackle medium to completely dry before applying the next layer of paint.

Here is where the magic happens. Once the crackle medium was try I applied Wise Owl Paint Mohair. The crackle process happens pretty quickly.

Once the paint has dried I sealed with Black Sea Salve. Not only will this piece be sealed its also smells great.
Let me know your thoughts! I have to say that creating this process was definitely fun!
